I posted on Ruger but don't seem to get any feedback. My first pistol purchase. I recently got a new super single six, 5.5". been to the range once (lots of bad weather around here.) would appreciate feed back; * What group should a good shooter get at 25 Yds. I seem to be getting about 3" I have used a variety of LR and all seems to be about the same. * I went to Wally World to get some mag ammo. They only had one box - Remington premium stuff at $15.97/box. Is mag ammo that expensive any more/ and in short supply? Thanks.

If you want a Single Six that's really accurate with Long Rifle ammo, you have to score a REALLY old one.
I'm not sure of the exact year, but Ruger introduced a "Magnum" Single Six that was .22 WMR only (no Long Rifle cylinder) and had a bore a few thousandths of an inch bigger, since the mags were jacketed bullets, as opposed to the soft lead bullets of the Long Rifle ammo. With the introduction of the "convertible" a few years later, all the Single Sixes got the larger diameter bore, whether they were convertible or not. As a result, the accuracy suffers somewhat when shooting LR ammunition. The accuracy is still adequate for most purposes, though. If you want to shoot bullseye competition, get a Ruger automatic pistol - since they never have and never will shoot magnums, they have the smaller bore diameter.
As to your group size.... beg, borrow, or steal a good .22 target pistol and see how you shoot that. 3 inches at 25 yards sounds pretty big for a Single Six, so I suspect it may be the shooter.
$16 a box sounds pretty high for .22 mag - might be some variation between different brands, but it's about $12 a box for CCI and Federal around here.

my intent is just to plink, not serious target work. I know a Ruger auto would be more accurate, but in PA you cant hunt( shoot varmints or anything) with a semi. Also in terms of group, I have never shot a pistol very much, so I need to work on that a lot.

apparently youve been out of circulation for a while.
all ammo has gone up.
before you give up, try different brands/types of ammo in your gun. if you want to shoot 22Mag, then also try various brands/types too.
as wwb mentioned, your SS is a compromise to shoot 22LR/Mag.
also, make sure you bench/rest the gun while you do the testing.
if you want a more accurate gun, look at the Freedom Arms 22. but be prepared to pay.
also, look at a S&W K22/M17, 617 or M18. The K22 can be found used if you know what to look for.
some of the Colt Revolvers are accurate too.

strut- I've got a new model single six- 5.5" barrel I use it for plinking, practice, and small game-
3" open sights isn't all that bad- how's the trigger
for kicks I put my Red Dot Tru-Point on it- does quite well with the Walmart Rem 22 LR- 550 pack goes for $18.45 here- any particular reason you choose WMR's
