I'm a noob to CCW's (I have shot guns throughout my life) and have basically settled on a Springfield XD but I'm not sure on size or caliber. I think a 3" subcompact 9mm would be great for me since it is very small but I'm wondering if I would be better with a .40 S&W. I don't know if I can find the .40 S&W in a subcompact 3" around here but am wondering if I would easily be able to conceal the 4" compact.

I frequently wear a shirt, tie, and slacks and am wondering if I will be able to conceal anything with this kind of attire.

Welcome to the board!

If you're not certain about the gun,my suggestion would be to try one of each first. You may find one of them more managable than the other. As for which one is more concealable, there again, you're gonna have to try one on for size. What works well for one person, doesn't mean it'll work for the next. You should also decide where you're gonna carry it and how.

You should be able to get the 3" model in 40 S&W . . . . I thought real long about that one before I settled on my glock 39.

Do a search on this site for ccw holsters . . . . there's a company (and of course I can't find the link to their website) that makes a concealed carry holster for use with a tucked in shirt. The picture on the web site looked really good, but I can't remember the name. I thought about getting one, but the company I work for has a policy against firearms on company property   "In order to maintain a safe working environment" Nice huh?

I've had both the 4" XD Service and 3" sub-compact and eventually went with the Service modle for concealed carry use.
My reasons for this were thus;
The extra 1" of barrel length is pretty much not noticed when carrying but makes a bit of difference in accuracy and there is a much greater difference in terminal ballistics (what happens at the target) than one would think with an inch difference in barrel length. The big problem area for concealment is in the grip area and this is where I made my decision. The grip on the subcompact came with a finger extension which is great from a controllability and accuracy standpoint as you can use all your fingers on the grip which helps to shoot the gun tremendously. The problem is, it extends the grip length out to the same as with the Service model which makes concealability a little more difficult at the cost of several rounds. Replacing with a flat base resolved the length issue but left the little finger dangling in the wind. So, I dumped the sub for the Service and find this to be a very good choice for me. For those times I feel concealment is more important than controlability, I carry a Kel-Tec in either 40 S&W or 9mm. It is smaller than most paperback books and still carries 10 rounds with a magazine extension. It does have a very heavy trigger, the sights are crude, and it is no long range shooter but I can hide it anywhere.
I conceal my Service XD under most types of clothing ranging from shorts and an untucked T-shirt to dress clothes. Wear slightly loose fitting clothes in medium colors and the gun should hide fairly well. I find that one can't wear white often as a dark gun butt will show through unless the material is fairly thick and coarse. the wearing of a white T-shirt underneath can make the gun show up even more if the shirt material is the least bit shear. Real dark colors like black, dark blue, and burgandy allow the gun to print a bit more but again, if loose fitting, few pick up on it.
I wear an inside waistband (IWB) holster the most frequently and have several I switch off between depending on the circumstances. The three I use the most are from Galco, C-Tac, and Blackhawk. They each have a couple of models that one can choose from.
As for caliber, I had both in 40 S&W but 9mm is effective, easier to shoot, and cheaper to shoot. With good personal defense ammo, it would be just fine as a defensive round. The 40 S&W has a fair bit of twist and recoil to it which can make it a bit harder to shoot decently, another reason I like the larger model.

I can only speak for the .45. Terrific pistol, highest capacity .45 out there. 5,000 rounds and no problems.

Remember this factors:

Once again "9mm vs 45 acp"

I'd suggest you get the biggest caliber that you can afford to PRACTICE A LOT with.

Have you shot both? Which did you like better? 9mm will cost a whole lot less than .45ACP. I'm actually considering getting a 1911 in 9mm due to ammo cost difference.

I agree with uglydog. I like the service model, too. I have a 9mm XD and a .45ACP XD, both service models, and I like them both. The 9mm will be fine. You can get the .45ACP later after you become good with the 9mm. You can buy excellent self defense loads for the 9mm.

Dito... I've got over 2000 through mine. Conceals well with smart carry.

If the 9mm XD grip feels best in your hand but you want a larger caliber go for the 45GAP it has the same ballistics up to a 200 gr bullet as the 45ACP. Because of my having a small hand I took this route. Using Speer gold Dot factory ammo in my 4" bbl accuracy is supurb but expensive at a buck a round. Am trying to find a less expensive reload now.

Holy Cow Irish, a BUCK a round.... your shootin GOLD.... :D

Try this site. They have an east coast and west coast warehouse, depends on where you live, it might even be in your home town...

http://www.outdoormarksman.com/index.php?warehouse=west

The cheapest .45gap they have are, 16.95 for a box of 50, speer lawman.

I didn't see any factory relaods for the gap, but they have them for most other cal. For taget I use the Factory reloads, and have NEVER had a jam with them.

I am sure there are other sites out there also, but this is the one that I use.

Holy Cow is right. A box of 20 with tax,20.00
I've tried the lawman but they just dont shoot right in my XD.
The Gold Dots from a rest @25 yds, out of 4 rounds 3 were in the 10 ring and one split the 8 and 9 ring. Outstnding accuracy for any 4" bbl.
What I really need is an accurate load from somebody who has one of these XD45GAP's and save me a ton of experimenting.Have you decided on the one you want yet?

I shoot a .40 cal XD. I practice with the factory reloads, and have about 7000 rounds of them through my xd with NO JAMS what so ever. Then about 500 or so rounds of Federal American Eagles... Have you tried the Federal American Eagle ammo. They feed nice, and they should be about 19.99 for a box of 50. plus or minus with tax..
I think I would sell the GAP and get the 45acp...just a thought....

Good luck in finding the right ammo.

I see where you're coming from but the .45 grip is not comfortable in my hand (too large) whereas the 45GAP has the same size grip as the XD in 9MM. If a pistol does not fit your hand properly it's kinda like wearing shoes that don't fit well. I,m going to stick with it. Someone out there has a good reload developed for it, just a matter of finding them. Thanks for the suggestion though.
