Can someone give me the short answer to the differences between
all these .40 S&W models? Or even where to go to find some differences.

The Blue Book is probably the most comprehensive source of descriptions and values. Not only for S&W, but for nearly every make. It's woth getting a copy - often places like Midway or Natchez will have last year's issue for a bargain price.

I have zero knowledge about S&W autoloaders, so I can't be of much help. Wheelguns are my area of S&W knowledge.

there is also a book out. "The Standard Catalog of S&W", 3rd ed. by Supica and Nahas

you should be able to find it a your local bookstore or maybe older revs at your local library.

Use your search engine to ID different models.There will be stainless frames and alloy frames, traditional D/A , and DAO. Different barrel lengths. Sometimes a blue finish.
