When you say "target shooting", are you intending to punch paper with a reasonable degree of accuracy, or, as I infer from your "large magazine" comment, do you just intend to blast away and hope to eventually hit something?

If you're interested in accuracy, start with a good revolver. If you INSIST on an autoloader, there is no choice but a 1911. You can put the DA and DAO autoloaders where the sun don't shine.

But you still won't hit anything with them!

I would recommend a revolver, something big (.357/.44/500) for accurate shooting. Single action is the best way to go because of the crisp almost effortless trigger. DAO guns tend to have heavy or draggy triggers which lead to less accurate shooting. Try to find a 7 shot revolver if capacity is an issue. If you aim carefully and make every shot count then reloading shouldn't be a problem.

I like to reload, it gives me another excuse to handle my revolver.

Ok esperts. What is the best handgun at a reasonable price from $400-$500 for target shooting? I'm looking for the biggest magazine out there to avoid reloading all the time.
Big "hi-cap" magazines equal lots of failure to feeds and other problems.

There is always the Calico .22 pistol that holds something like 75 rounds of .22lr.

::EDIT::
Look at the link.

It holds 100 rounds. You will also have a pistol that looks like it came from an early 50's space movie!

I remember the Calico having a rounder mag... this must be a different variant.

Paul - explain the troll comment to me... I'm not catching it. (Either here or on PM, I'm just curious)

I think the first question to answer here is wwb's. What is the intended use exactly? Then, a caliber could be better determined and then a gun recommendation.

Who cares... well all like to blow smoke over these subjects anyway, haha!

-- My vote would be that new .22 Beretta Neos. As for a long mag... I like a little reloading time. Gives me time away from staring at a stationary target for too long. Time to talk with the buddies too.

My suggestion is for the .22lr. Wether it be an auto or wheel gun. The learning curve is so much cheaper. I started with ruger markIII 22/45.I'am now looking at 1911 models, the ones I can convert to .22,the springfield's look like the best choice. I'm not sure how it would be starting out with a 1911 conversion gun. When I bought mine I didn't even know there was sucha thing. I think now it woulda been cheaper to by a .45 convert it and learn then swap back and forth as the mood struck.I'm pretty new to pistols, and still am not sure how much is involved with changing over from .45 to .22. The other site says it fairly easy, but takes a break in period. Anyhow thats another consideration for you to look at.

You guys are so funny man! Who cares we all love to show off the big guns. Although I'm a shotgun fan, I still like indoor ranges. "Troll" is someone who hides identities in forums. I got nothing to hide. NRA member since 1998.

Anyway, I did get a .357 magnum.. at $200 so that's a deal !!

Take Care!!! Yeaalll ! Peace!

Details, man! We need details! What company, barrel length, how does it shoot? It's cruel to tease us with such sparse information.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy it. The great thing about .357 is shooting .38 when ammo seems too expensive. Sounds like a good price for the gun too.

Ahhh ... hungry for details Master Obi One. It's a Tourus made (actually made in Brazil -- not USA) .357 Magnum. Yes, it feeds .38 special and .357 bullets. I'm looking a good scope with mounting kits because it keeps aiming to the right when I take it to the indoor range. 8)
