I had a chance to buy one of these break open English pistols for 189.00 at a local shop. GB and other auction sites are selling them for bewteen 500-800.00
I called the shop to hold it for me, and when I got there, some gent had already bought while I was in route.

I've put two guns on layaway recently and I had to put money down for the store to hold it for me. Maybe they didn't think you were really coming for it? If the store had several employees and the one you called got distracted I could see how an honest oversight could be made and another employee could sell the gun. If its a small shop (one person) and they said they'd hold it for you then I may not go back. It sounds like you missed out on a great deal either way. :(

The girl told me when she got off the phone with me, a customer came in & dealt with someone else, she did not have time to tag the gun before it was sold. Disapointed, but they have cut me many a deal, so I will not pitch a fit.
Will keep looking for the next deal on something I don't have. :D

For a big, ugly, and awkward gun they hold a strange fascination with those who should know better. I have one in .455 and it is a beast to handle. That said, it is one of the last ones I'd sell for many of those same reasons. Ammo can be a pain to get at times, everyone seems to stock it unless you want it then it is on back order. Good luck with your quest, may you be more fortunate in the future.
