I've recently joined the military and moved away from a family that is afraid of guns. I'm looking to buy a pistol ranging $300-$600 but I know very little about the difference in brands or models when it comes to quality so I don't really know where to start looking for firearms. I'm buying it mainly for home defense purposes but also to occasionally take it to the range. Suggestions on any brand/model/caliber are appreciated.
