The Mec-Gar mag that came with my 1911A1 (PX9707, mil-spec double stack) has what I would call an "extended floorplate".

The bottom flat plate on the mag sticks out about 1/4" beyond the front of the grip. More of an asthetic/CCW issue than for being at the range plinking.

Can/should I file it, to make it fit flush?

This sounds odd, unless it has an extension, is missing the extension, or something is blocking the mag well, I would think it should fit flush. I would not file it as that could affect reliability. Try buying a new magazine and trying that before doing any "mods" to the magazine.

I think you are correct. It sounds like an extension "cap" might be missing. I, too, would caution against filing it.
