Please help me with the date and value of my Smith&Wesson model 36 Chiefs special with a 3 inch barrel. It's in very nice condition with the box and paper work.

Here's the number on the bottom of the hand grip J5765xx

If you open up the cylinder you should see a stamping that looks like this on the frame: Mod 36-1

It should be a square butt with a heavy bbl judging by the s/n given. The Chiefs Special is built ont the J-Frame

Yes, it has the 36-1, and it is the square butt.

The gun is in very good condition/Looks new.

Go to www.gunbroker.com type in the model in the search window and you will find many. Just look for the same type as yours is and check prices. That will give you a pretty good idea.
