welcome,
im surprised how many people sollicit legal advice on the web.
what is a "hassle" to you?
there is a place called the BATFE and they will answer your questions. you may have to wait to speak to someone, but my last time i spoke to them, last year, they were really nice about my paperwork errors.
to get back to your question.
some background is required. You know there are State AND Federal laws that are in affect? If one says NO, its NO. you cant play one off the other.
look here for some info.

If you find your state allows you to possess a supressor, then i would find a supressor dealer in your state and chat with them. let them know what you consider a "hassle" so you dont waste their time. they will know the ins/outs of what it takes to own/purchase one.
i could tell you here, buy you are already confused, so why pile it on.
