I've been teaching a local Boy Scout Troupe firearm class, safety & shooting techniques, getting them ready to earn their Rifle & Shotgun Merit Badge's. I thought I'd post one part that I have them repeat.

"A firearm safety is a mechanical device, that may, can & has failed". "Never ever... substitute safe firearm handling techniques with a firearm safety".

Very true words dovehunter. I've heard (lucky never saw) of tragic things happening when safeties are on. A guy dad USED to work with was doing a prank and blew his brains out. I couldn't believe the guy did that, but it's a hard reminder of gun safety, to say the least.
