I have a S&W M&P 45 and truly like it. I'm looking for a compact to carry. I've held the M&P, XD and the Glock in the compact size but my range (or any in the area) don't rent the compacts to shoot. All three are light and feel pretty good but how do they shoot? I understand none of them are long range pistols but for a quick point and shoot pistol does anyone have experience?

Should have gone with the XD because it's the best... Not a chance buddy. I agree that the XD is one of the finest poly shooters out there, and by most accounts better than most of the polys made today.

I do have to take exception to the opinion that it is in some way better than the M&P line. I'll throw up some of the latest reviews of the M&P... Take a gander:

Just a few of the more recent reviews and opinions of the M&P line of handguns... Long story-short, Smith&Wesson did their homework.

Maybe you should own or even shoot more than one pistol before forming hard-set opinions. There is way too much of that on these forums.

Moon, your right on the XD is a truly good pistol and I have a lot of friends that believe it's the best on the market. I've shot there pistols and have to say these are sweet pistols!

With that said gglass laid out a lot of good info why the S&W M&P rocks. I have to say I truly like the two I have.

My XD friends have shot my M&P's and agrre these are sweet pistols.

Then again it's good that we have the choice to have such sweet pistols. My wish/buy list is yet another M&P in 40 cal, a XD in 40 cal and PPK in 380.

So many pistols, only so many I can hide from my wife.
I think the M&P is a great gun as well, shot one at the range
the other day, I do believe that S&W, Springfield, are at the
top of their game.
I'm going to stick with the XD line, and maybe a 1911 to
add to my collection of little beauties.

Moonshadow,
I just bought a Bi-tone XD-45 and finally got out to shoot it yesterday, I was skeptical about all polymer framed pistols and thought they would be too light and the recoil would be horrendous!

Boy was I wrong! This is one of the nicest 45's I have ever shot fits my hand well and Recoil is very moderate. I like the feel of it better than a glock, The first time out I was shooting 230 gr Round ball ammo at a silouhette target and was keeping a 3" group in the head at 25 yds! It surprised the heck out of me. So I am sold on the XD's and will probably buy another one. This one may be an XDM model! :D

Congrats Clay!
The XD is a good pistol and finding it to be the one that you truly like is nice. I'm sticking with my S&W M&P choice as my favorite. The best news is we have so many good pistols to choose from!

Heck some of my best friends shoot XD's and I don't hold it against them :D
