I own a S&W Mod 28-2
The serial # is N1012XX, do any of you have a book that would show the year it was made?
Thanks.

The "N" prefix serial numbers began in 1969.

The model 28 was made from 1954 to 1986. There were 3 engineering changes to the model 28, yours would be the second engineering change.

The second engineering change happened in 1961. The third engineering change happened in 1982.

Yours was made sometime between 1969 and 1982, that's the best I can do at this time.

Did you ever find out any info? Maybe a little late but here is what I come up with.

The first - 2 came out in 1961 which this mod included; a cylinder stop change and eliminated the trigger guard screw.

1969 was a change to the "N" serial prefix

The 28-3 was introduced in 1982 which ended the P/R.

That said and to answer your question;

I think your gun was made in the year of '73 as best as I can tell.

Better late than never ???? LOL

I just want to thank the both of you for your response. That is close enough for me, I have had the gun for about 25 or 30 years. It looks new and functions perfectly. Have a great day.
