My sister in law has a 40 cal S&W w/ ten round mags. Apparently, the 10th round will not feed and the gun jams. Shots one through nine are cycling just fine. My first inclination was to start with replacing the magazine springs. Are there any other areas I need to investigate or should this simple fix solve the problem?

does it also do it with only one round in the mag? Some mags have that little dimple on the tongue (where you feed the rounds into on the magazine) This is what that little pimple thing is for. To keep the last round from moving around.

I tend to think it seems like the culprit is a magazine problem. Since all the other rounds fired ok.
I know that you can get these kind of mags for the 1911 45 type autos, i would think they can be had for your particular pistol.
